Tough Two Years Ahead

The song “Sweet Home Alabama” has a good line in it: “In Birmingham, they love the governor. Now we all did what we could do.”

The reference by Lynyrd Skynyrd is to the segregationist George Wallace, who terrorized black people in the 1960s.

Ultimately, Wallace lost power, and a would-be assassin’s bullet put him in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.

I thought of the song when evaluating last week’s vote. I know I did all I could do. I clearly laid out the danger from the Biden administration and the present-day Democratic Party. But millions of Americans dismissed the warning.d

Each voter had a reason, but history will show the destruction to our society that will occur over the next two years. Some of us will avoid the worst of it – but the poor will not.

At this point, perceptive Americans will move forward and accept the “will of the people,” no matter how misguided it is. This is not a mandate situation; more Americans voted for House Republicans than Democrats.

But the progressive movement was not derailed as I hoped it would be.

Tough two years ahead.
